Literal and figurative traverses of basin and range

Hardly wilderness

It's supposed to start raining tonight and keep going throughout the day tomorrow as a cold front sweeps through, so I made sure I got in a quick mountain bike ride this afternoon. And by quick, I mean I hit my home trail - the one I can ride to right from the garage door, the one that doesn't need a State Land permit or a National Forest pass, and the one I can be back from before the sun - in these just-before-Solstice days - goes down. In exchange for the convenience, I accept that I'm in the far front-country, never far from civilization with all of its structures and detritus. But hey, a ride is a ride, no miles are bad miles, and I always have fun.

Here's my typical lean-the-bike-on-something photo, only this time I did some pseudo-creative horsing around with it after I downloaded it onto the computer. If you look closely, you'll notice I'm on a geared hardtail. BeanSS and I have been riding our rigid 29er singlespeeds lately, but I adjust readily to having gears and a suspension fork. I was surprised by how sore I felt afterwards, which I think might be due to the fact that I can ride farther and faster.

There's probably an acre or two of broken glass scattered about, and I've lost a tire or two to the shards over the years. Thankfully, most of this crap is not on the trails themselves and when the light hits it just right, it's almost pretty. Almost.

I hope it dries out and warms back up after the winter storm is over because, I want to get a little further from home for my next ride.
